Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., acknowledged in a Father’s Day video posted on Twitter he’s screwed up by not always being present for his children.
“I’m here, because I missed a lot of Little League games, not just because I have a job that requires me to travel a lot. I’ve missed Little League games because I misprioritize, because I screw up. I’m often lousy at this calling,” he said.
“You know what, all of you dads out there are.”
Real fatherhood isn’t anything like a greeting card. We all screw up. Here’s to all the dads out there who show up & try again. #FathersDay pic.twitter.com/KtbcLJFzOy— Senator Ben Sasse (@SenSasse) June 18, 2017
But, he continued, fatherhood is about showing up and trying again.
Sasse said he recently spoke to a father who has spent years in prison, unable to watch his kids grow up.
“He’s not going to get those years back, and he’s hurting about it. Doesn’t change the fact that he needs to be a dad for his kids tomorrow and next year because they need him,” Sasse said.
Another dad that Sasse talked to “stupidly” had an affair that ruined his marriage. Those kids still need their dad, Sasse said.
“America’s about new beginnings and the end of your story has not been written. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there who want to show up and try again,” he said.
