Trump wanted to trademark phrase ‘Rigged Election!’ in aftermath of 2020 loss

In the days following his loss in the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump sought to trademark the phrase “Rigged Election!” according to emails obtained by the Jan. 6 committee.

In an email sent to former senior adviser Jared Kushner, Dan Scavino, the former White House deputy chief of staff for communications, forwarded a request from Trump that sought to trademark the phrases “Rigged Election!” and “Save America” and register them as URLs.

“Hey Jared! POTUS wants to trademark/own rights to below, I don’t know who to see — or ask … I don’t know who to take to,” Scavino wrote in the Nov. 9 email, according to transcripts released by the Jan. 6 committee.

Later that day, Kushner forwarded the email to Eric Trump, the president’s son, and White House aides Alex Cannon, Sean Dollman, and Justin Clark to ask, “Guys — can we do ASAP please?”

Dollman responded to the email to confirm Trump’s Save America PAC was already trademarked but offered to file for rights to the phrase “Save America” itself. Kushner simply responded, “Go.”

It’s not clear what Trump wanted to do with the URL registrations connected to the two phrases, but the email request came before the Save America PAC was created. However, it’s possible that request was the genesis in which the political action committee was created, Kushner testified.

The details emerged in the latest dump of witness testimony released from the Jan. 6 committee on Friday, which included transcripts from witness interviews with several of Trump’s closest aides — such as Kushner, former attorney Rudy Giuliani, and campaign spokesman Jason Miller.

Kushner’s full testimony sheds light on what was going on behind the scenes at the White House in the days and weeks following the 2020 election, as several of Trump’s aides offered him conflicting advice on how to respond to his loss to President Joe Biden.

“Rigged election” has become a clarion cry of Trump’s, regularly popping up in Truth Social posts and during his rallies since his defeat at the hands of Biden.
