Democrats on Capitol Hill praised Joe Biden’s decision to select Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.

“Joe Biden’s naming of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for Vice President marks an historic and proud milestone for our country,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, in a statement. “As the Vice President of the United States, Senator Harris will continue her legacy of trailblazing leadership to move our nation forward.”

Harris, a fellow Californian, is a relative newcomer to Congress. She won her Senate seat in 2016.

“As a United States Senator, as California Attorney General and in every leadership position she has held, Kamala Harris has advanced a more just and fair future for all,” Pelosi said. “Rooted in strong values and her proud American story, Vice President Harris will be a tireless champion for hard-working families everywhere.”

Harris won the spot on the ticket over other female congressional candidates, including Florida Rep. Val Demings, who was on Biden’s shortlist.

Demings, a former Orlando police chief, also issued a statement shortly after Biden’s announcement.

“For a little girl who grew up poor, Black and female in the South to be considered during this process has been an incredible honor. I feel so blessed,” Demings said. “To see a Black woman nominated for the first time reaffirms my faith that in America, there is a place for every person to succeed no matter who they are or where they come from.”
