“The coast is our community’s backyard. Little Bay is normally such a calm, beautiful place enjoyed by families,” said Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker in a statement. “To lose someone to a shark attack like this is chilling. We are all in shock.”

Emergency responders told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the person suffered “catastrophic injuries” and that there was “nothing” they could do.

Witnesses at the scene said they saw a swimmer get pulled under the water by a large shark in a bloody attack that lasted “for several seconds,” according to the outlet.

Police said they would work with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the death.

All of Randwick City’s beaches have been closed for 24 hours following the attack. Lifeguards will continue patrolling the area for shark sightings.

Police did not immediately identify the swimmer.
