A pair of polls released on the eve of President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial show a slim difference of opinion on whether or not he should be convicted and removed from office.
A narrow majority of people in the United States do not wish to see Trump removed from office, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. The same day, CNN released its own poll showing that 51% want Trump to be booted from the White House.
In both surveys, respondents who identified as Democratic voters overwhelmingly indicated they want Trump removed. Among the entire sample for the CNN study, 26% described themselves as Republicans, 32% described themselves as Democrats, and 42% said they were independents or members of another party.
Since the impeachment process started, approval for Trump’s removal has generally hovered between 36% and 47%, according to Politico.
The margin of error for the CNN poll was plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. Gallup listed a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
The vast majority of national polls incorrectly predicted Hillary Clinton would win the presidency in 2016.
Democrats are impeaching Trump on two articles: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He is expected to be acquitted by the Senate.
