Pelosi: ‘Nothing is more wholesome’ than women in politics

PHILADELPHIA – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., declared the dawn of a new era of progressive and inclusive politics just after Democrats nominated Hillary Clinton as their presidential nominee.

“The Democratic women of the House are leading the way to unleash the power of America’s women and working families in our economy, in our society and in our democracy,” said the California lawmaker, flanked on both sides by Democratic congresswomen.

“Nothing is more wholesome for America than the increased participation of and leadership of women in government and politics,” she added. “Here, tonight, our women leaders personify the integrity, imagination and idealism, and indeed the courage that will build a stronger America for hard-working families, as Hillary Clinton did. [The Clintons] have spent their lifetimes fighting for women and children, and in November, we will affirm that great truth of country: When women succeed, America succeeds.”

Clinton formally became the Democratic nominee Tuesday, making her the first woman in American history to become the presidential candidate of a major party.

Her chief primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., conceded final defeat, and encouraged delegates to nominate the former secretary of state as their champion to face off against GOP nominee Donald Trump in November.
