The FBI is investigating an overseas attempt to hack the Trump Organization, according to a new report.
The bureau notified Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, President Trump’s sons, of the attempted cyberattack and held a meeting with the pair at the FBI’s headquarters in New York on May 8.
The president’s two sons, who serve as executive vice presidents for the Trump Organization, met with cybersecurity agents for the bureau and representatives from the CIA, law enforcement officials told ABC News.
The meeting in New York took place one day before Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey. The FBI is also investigating Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and the Trump campaign’s potential ties to Russia.
Eric Trump wouldn’t confirm or deny the meeting with the bureau, but told ABC News the company hadn’t been hacked.
“That’s crazy,” he said. “We weren’t hacked. I can tell you that.”
Richard Frankel, a retired FBI official and an ABC News contributor, said an FBI investigation into potential hacking of the Trump Organization could pose some risks, since agents could gain access to the Trump Organization’s computer network as the probe proceeds. That access could potentially lead agents to records or communications related to other investigations, such as the FBI’s probe into Russia’s meddling in the election.
“There could be stuff in there that they do not want to become part of a separate criminal investigation,” Frankel said.
Trump’s two sons have traveled to Russia in their capacity with the Trump Organization several times over the last 10 years.
