Republican Rep. Andy Barr won in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, which was seen as an early sign of how the night might go for both parties.
And in Florida’s 15th District, Republican Ross Spano was projected to defeat his Democratic opponent.
As of 10 p.m., Democrats were only projected to pick up one seat, in Florida’s 26th district. Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was set to defeat incumbent Carlos Curbelo.
Republicans were ahead in 11 other tossup races, while Democrats were leading in seven other races.
The roughly even split in the early races was leading some TV analysts to say there was little sign of a giant “blue wave” that would carry Democrats to an easy takeover of the House.
That said, Democrats still have a chance to take over the House, as many of the tossup races are too close to call.
Many pollsters roughly estimated that Democrats would need to win about one-third of the tossup races in order to win back the House.
