Some schools in Florida might be able to ease their mask mandates by the end of October.
Making the decision based on COVID-19 information for the state, Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said parents would be able to choose whether or not their children wear masks to school.
“In light of these favorable data trends both in our schools and community, MDCPS will continue to review protocols on a weekly basis to identify opportunities for further relaxation, including adjustments to mask protocols,” he said.

The superintendent discussed the mask protocols at a school board meeting on Wednesday, saying the school will come to a decision on the matter by the end of October.
Whatever decision they come to will take professional opinions, including data and input from medical doctors, into account.

Fewer than 1,000 of the district’s 330,000 students had to quarantine — a record low, Carvalho said, according to CBS Miami.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has long opposed mask mandates in public schools. He pushed back on the Biden administration’s coronavirus vaccination deadline for businesses on Thursday, calling a special legislative session to determine whether or not it would be effectuated.
