Late-night host Stephen Colbert returned from his July Fourth break Monday to highlight how “everybody’s still talking about Russia.”
“But here’s the thing,” Colbert said in his opening monologue Monday. “There is no evidence of collusion, or even the desire to collude with the Russians, by anyone in the Trump campaign… is something that was true 48 hours ago.”
The “Late Show” host was referring to a weekend report revealing a previously undisclosed meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a lawyer with strong ties to the Kremlin who allegedly offered him damaging information regarding Hillary Clinton.

“Everything you think is with this family turns out to be,” Colbert added. “So it’s not a smoking gun, but it is a gun meeting with a Russian bullet about their mutual desire to smoke. Pretty damning!”
Colbert also ripped Trump Jr.’s shifting defense of the meeting in which he first said it was a short introduction to discuss a program about the adoption of Russian children and later revelation that he met with the lawyer because they might have helpful information for his father’s campaign.
“We’re supposed to believe that during the height of the presidential campaign, on the advice of a guy he met at the Miss Universe pageant, Don Jr. said, ‘Hey Jared, Paul, I know you guys are a little busy right now, but I need you to come to a meeting. With who? I don’t know. About what? I’m not telling you,” Colbert said.
Colbert’s monologue was filmed before another bombshell report was published Monday evening suggesting Trump Jr. was told in an email that the attorney had damaging information about Hillary Clinton that was part of a Russian effort to help the presidential candidacy of his father.
