House Speaker Paul Ryan reassured President Trump on Thursday that reports suggesting he will retire at the end of next year are inaccurate, and said he looks forward to working with Trump in the future, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.
“The president did speak to the Speaker not too long ago and made sure that the Speaker knew very clearly and in no uncertain terms that if that news was true, he was very unhappy with it,” Sanders told reporters during the White House press briefing. “The Speaker assured the president those were not accurate reports and that they look forward to working together for a long time to come.”
Politico reported Thursday that Ryan, R-Wis., wants to serve through the Nov. 2018 midterm elections and is seriously looking at retirement before the start of the next Congress.
But in a press conference earlier in the day, Ryan laughed off the suggestion his time in Washington, D.C., is coming to a close.
Sanders called reports that Ryan would retire at the end of this Congress “not accurate,” and said it appears Ryan was surprised by the claims in the report.
“It sounds like they are both committed to and looking forward to spending a lot more time together over the next hopefully seven, eight years,” she said.
