Vice President Kamala Harris‘s husband defended her during their visit in France after recent polls revealed her low approval ratings.
Doug Emhoff, the second gentleman, said Harris’s status as the first female, black, and Asian vice president in many ways can be “hard,” an apparent reference to her plummeting job approval ratings, but he said the struggle was “worth it.”
“One of the things I’ve learnt from being married to Kamala Harris is that to be first in so many things is hard,” Emhoff told Elisabeth Moreno, the French minister for gender equality, diversity, and equal opportunities. “She said once that breaking barriers involves breaking. And when you break something, sometimes you get cut, and when you get cut, sometimes you bleed.”
WHY IS KAMALA HARRIS HERE? FRENCH CONFUSED BY VEEP’S VISIT
President Joe Biden’s average job approval rating is 42.8%, with disapproval at 51.7%, according to RealClearPolitics, and Harris’s job approval is 40%, with disapproval at 51.4%. But a USA Today/Suffolk University poll published Monday found Biden’s approval was 38% and Harris’s was 28% before the House passed the bipartisan infrastructure deal.
Despite the low approval ratings of the duo, the Biden administration has reiterated its support for the two, with Karine Jean-Pierre, a spokeswoman for the White House, saying that “polls are all over the map” and the leaders will continue to “push the president’s economic policies,” which “will improve the lives of nearly every American.”
White House chief of staff Ron Klain also showed his support for the vice president in a tweet, saying it was “great that the world is getting to see what we see in the WH every day.”
The vice president “is an incredible leader and representative of our country,” Klain said.
It’s great that the world is getting to see what we see in the WH every day: @VP is an incredible leader and representative of our country.

Harris has garnered criticism in the past for waiting 90 days to visit the southern border after being appointed the immigration czar. In September, the vice president hired messaging gurus to help shore up long-term planning, as Harris is still viewed as a future Democratic presidential contender despite her low approval numbers.
