President Trump’s approval rating has dropped to just 36 percent in June, down 5 points since the last survey was taken in late April, according to a CBS poll released Tuesday.
The June 15-18 survey found the majority of U.S. adults disapprove of Trump’s performance, and don’t like how he is handling the federal and congressional investigations into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Respondents ranked Trump’s work in a number of areas, but gave him his worst score for his handling of the Russia probe. Just 28 percent of people polled approved of his actions related to the probe, and 63 percent disapproved.
Trump scored a 42 and 44 percent approval rating for how he’s handling the economy and terrorism, respectively, but 51 and 50 percent of those asked disapproved.
His only positive approval rating was in response to a question about how he’s handling last week’s shooting of Republican lawmakers while they practiced baseball. The poll said 46 percent approve of Trump on that issue, and 36 percent disapprove.
One-third of people said Trump’s handling of the Russia issue, including his firing of former FBI Director James Comey and reports that the FBI was investigating him for obstructing justice, have hurt him.
It said 57 percent of those asked believe Comey’s story as he testified before Congress, and just 31 percent believe Trump. Comey said Trump encouraged him to end his investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn, a charge Trump rejected.
The poll was conducted by landline and cell phone with 1,117 randomly selected adults nationwide and had a 4-point margin of error.
