Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., said Sunday it would be in the country’s best interest if Roy Moore found “something else to do” rather than run as the GOP candidate for Alabama’s open Senate seat.
“What I’ve said in the past, I want to be very clear, the allegations are stronger than the denial and Roy Moore should find something else to do, which was my way of suggesting that he should not be in the race,” Scott told “Fox News Sunday.”
“There’s a strong possibility with a new candidate, a new Republican candidate, a proven conservative, that we can win that race in Alabama.”
Moore has been accused of sexual misconduct by a slew of women, some of whom were in their teens when the impropriety is alleged to have taken place.
The former judge has vehemently denied the claims, writing them off as a political smear campaign headed by the GOP establishment.
“This controversy is over the necessity of respecting women. Period,” Scott said. “This has nothing to do with establishment Republicans or politics. This has to do with the character that we want displayed in the United States of America and especially in our leadership realm.”
Scott added a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into sexual misconduct accusations against Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., “is absolutely the right starting point.”
“This is a brand new era,” Scott said. “The reality of it is that we should take responsibility.”
Franken came under fire last week after a photograph of him emerged in which he appears to be groping radio host Leeann Tweeden during a 2006 USO tour of the Middle East.
Tweeden also claims Franken forcibly kissed her while they were rehearsing for a skit the pair performed for U.S. troops abroad.
