HBO comedian Bill Maher said Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic amounts to impeachment.
While interviewing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Real Time with Bill Maher host said it was “galling” that the president, in his view, was prioritizing the plights of some states over others during the coronavirus pandemic, calling it impeachable.
“I find one of the most galling parts of this is that the president is favoring certain states over the others. Governors who are nice to him, as he calls it, get a lot of attention and all the equipment they want,” Maher began.
“To me, this is even more of an impeachable offense than what he did with Ukraine or Russia. How do you stop a president who is blatantly not the president of every state equally?” Maher asked, claiming that the president has not prioritized states such as California.
Sanders then claimed Trump’s response was “literally beyond comprehension,” but suggested it could be to bolster his chances in key states during the 2020 election.
“If you think that during a campaign, you’re not going to see a lot of money from the Trump administration going to battleground states … you would be grossly underestimating the venality of this president.”
Prominent leaders in heavily Democratic states, including Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and Andrew Cuomo of New York, have lauded the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Trump reelection campaign shared an ad with the two praising the administration.
“He said everything that I could’ve hoped for,” Newsom says in the video. “I can tell you the actions he has taken. His team has been on it,” said Cuomo.
