Trump: China should be ‘very proud’ of their ‘unrelenting’ trade leaders

President Trump praised Chinese leaders who helped negotiate Friday’s limited trade deal, calling them “tough” people whom China should take pride in.

“The people of China have to be very proud of your team. They are unrelenting. I say that in a positive way,” Trump told reporters Friday. “They are unrelenting. They are tough, they are smart, and they have negotiated a great deal. But I think the people of China should be very proud of this team, starting with the vice-premier, a very extraordinary man. We’ve gotten to know each other well. And everybody on my team respects your team.”

The comments came after Trump reached a limited trade deal on Friday with China. The deal means tariffs set to take effect will be canceled in exchange for China reportedly agreeing to buy 30 million tons of soybeans, along with increases in purchases of U.S. meat products.

The United States was set to raise tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods from 25% to 30% before the trade deal.
