Police officers in major U.S. cities to patrol in pairs

Following the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas, officers in other major U.S. cities will be patrolling in pairs for the immediate future.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news conference Friday morning she gave the order around midnight for officers and supervisors to pair up.

Most officers patrol alone.

“Looking at the type of attack that happened in Dallas, a two-man car, a four-man car, a 10-man car, isn’t going to make much of a difference. But it makes the officers feel much safer,” Lanier said.

Police departments in Las Vegas, St. Louis, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and Burlington, Vt., said they are also taking similar measures and ordering patrols be conducted in pairs.

During a protest in Dallas against police brutality Thursday night, a shooter opened fire, shooting 12 police officers, five fatally.
