Man who died in MontCo plane crash identified

Officials have identified the man killed in a plane crash in Laytonsville as a 79-year-old flight instructor.

The dead man, Frank Schmitt, worked out of Davis Airport there, said airport manager Alicia Harvey.

The incident occurred about 7:20 p.m. Monday. The plane took off from a runway but only made it about 150 feet before the engine gave out and the plan crashed into the woods, Harvey said.

Another man was injured in the crash and flown to a trauma center. The second victim is an experienced pilot, and the flight was a checkride for his license renewal, Harvey said.
