GOP asks FBI Director Christopher Wray to brief lawmakers on Chinese infiltration in government

Top Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Monday asked FBI Director Christopher Wray for details over how a Chinese Communist Party spy allegedly targeted Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California.

The letter also focuses on several ways the CCP is actively collecting key sensitive information from people in the United States and calls on the FBI to hold an immediate briefing on the depth and breadth of the CCP’s infiltration in U.S. government institutions.

Axios reported recently that an alleged Chinese spy cozied to Swalwell and other Democratic politicians for years. Now, Republicans are pressuring Democratic leaders to kick him off an intelligence committee.

“On our own soil, Chinese Communist Party intelligence operatives are strategically implementing new, creative ways to gain access and influence,” said the letter led by Oversight and Reform ranking member James Comer, a Kentucky Republican.

“We already know that the CCP seeks to infiltrate our academic institutions, allowing China to spew propaganda and potentially steal America’s intellectual property. Unfazed, the CCP is now targeting our most distinguished institutions and high-profile government officials,” said the letter to Wray and several Republican lawmakers.
