Report clears Fenty

An independent investigation into an $80 million city contract has exonerated former Mayor Adrian Fenty of any wrongdoing when his administration gave the contract to a company run by one of his fraternity brothers.

The investigation done pro bono by attorney Robert Trout did refer to the U.S. Attorney’s office questions related to perjury and the refusal of some witnesses to speak. It also found that the city was overcharged by the company, Banneker Ventures.

It took nearly a year to do the investigation. Last summer, the ongoing investigation was used to discredit Fenty’s re-election bid and helped add substance to charges of cronyism.

A special D.C. Council committee voted to release the full report to the public Monday morning.
