Trump wins Washington primary despite delegate dilemma

Donald Trump easily won the Washington primary Tuesday on his way to a likely Republican presidential nomination, with all his opponents on the ballot now out of the race.

Trump is the last candidate standing in the Republican presidential race, but supporters of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz continue to resist him. Cruz dropped out of the race on May 3, but won 40 of the state’s 41 delegates up for grabs at last weekend’s state GOP convention.

It didn’t matter Tuesday night. Trump was on course to win more than three-quarters of the vote in Washington’s primary with Cruz lagging well behind at around 10 percent.

Before quitting the 2016 race following a poor showing in Indiana, Cruz was expected to perform well in western states that had not yet voted. His Washington state supporters’ steadfast opposition to Trump could pose problems at this summer’s convention as the GOP’s presumptive nominee looks to portray a unified front to the American people.

Trump is expected to clinch the Republican presidential nomination during the June 7 primaries, which include California and New Jersey.
