Micros Systems growing in a down economy

Columbia-based Micros Systems’ profits rose 12 percent in the second quarter of the company’s fiscal year despite a 2.5 percent dip in revenue.

The company, which makes software used to process restaurant and hotel sales and inventory, posted profits of $27 million for the quarter ended Dec. 31. That was up from $24 million in the same quarter of 2007.

But quarterly revenue fell $6 million, from $244 million in same period of 2007 to $238 million in 2008.

For the year to date, profits are up 14 percent, to $52 million from $45 million at the same point in the previous fiscal year. Revenue is up 5 percent, going from $460 million to $482 million.

Micros posted 37 cents earnings per share, or EPS, for the second quarter. That was up 3 cents over the 34 cents earnings per share in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

“To generate record net income and EPS for our second quarter, and positive revenue growth for the first six months of our fiscal year in this challenging economic climate, is very gratifying,” Micros Chief Executive Officer Tom Giannopoulos said in a statement.
