Metro crane derailment causes morning delays

A crane derailed near Union Station on the Red Line Wednesday morning, damaging the tracks and causing delays. The equipment derailed at 4:23 a.m. Trains had to share a track until about 8 a.m. while crews made preliminary repairs. Workers planned to make permanent fixes to the damaged track overnight, Metro spokesman Reggie Woodruff said, but they shouldn’t affect service Thursday. Also on the Red Line, a tripped circuit breaker caused a false fire alarm at Friendship Heights, forcing an entrance to close. Then an arcing insulator near the Woodley Park stop filled the tunnel with smoke, causing more single-tracking. – Kytja Weir
