Jan. 6 committee delivers surprise before midterm elections: Washington Photos of the Week

The House Jan. 6 select committee convened for its last hearing before the midterm elections in the highest-profile event this week on Capitol Hill.

The panel voted Thursday unanimously to issue a surprise subpoena for former President Donald Trump to testify about the Capitol riot they allege he started with his false election claims and by beckoning backers to Washington to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. A defiant Trump denounced the committee Friday as “highly partisan political Hacks and Thugs” while repeating baseless claims the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen.”

The committee also released new behind-the-scenes video of the Capitol riot response that showed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and then-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) working the phones to get more law enforcement and military support to control the mob destroying the Capitol.

FIVE LOOSE ENDS THE JAN. 6 COMMITTEE HAS LEFT TO TIE UP

Meanwhile, the Senate returned for work on passing the National Defense Authorization Act, the major defense policy bill. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was in attendance before being admitted to the hospital on Thursday for not feeling well. Leahy, 82, was discharged on Friday.

Not too far from the Capitol, the Big Board restaurant filed a lawsuit against Washington, D.C., for temporarily shutting down the burger shop and pub for violating the district’s COVID-19 mandates. The H Street restaurant was championed by Republicans, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), earlier this year after owner Eric Flannery defied the district’s vaccine and masking protocols.
