DCPS wants YOU … for its cleaning crew

D.C. Public Schools is asking for volunteers this weekend for its 7th annual Beautification Day in preparation for the first day of school on Monday.

The effort was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all city public school buildings and requires volunteers at more than 100 schools.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Considering DCPS’ budget constraints, it sure beats paying for a professional service, doesn’t it? And as such, don’t expect too many freebies for your time, other than the fuzzy feeling you get from giving out of the goodness of your heart, of course. DCPS says breakfast will not be provided, but it will provide snacks and water for all volunteers.

Volunteers work includes “sweeping/washing the sidewalk, painting exterior doors, picking-up trash, planting flowers, trimming bushes, pulling weeds, laying mulch, etc.,” according to DCPS. Volunteers will get their  assignments from the site manager when they report to their assigned school.

Volunteers must sign up online and can choose from the list of participating schools. Those less inclined toward getting down and dirty can just donate supplies.
