Dorper Sheep Show brings breeders to Duncan

DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) — Sheep breeders are coming from as far as the east and west coasts to take part in the annual Mid-America Dorper Sheep Show and Sale in Duncan.

Educational events were set for Thursday, with show events starting on Friday at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center.

The Dorper is a domestic sheep that was bred in South Africa and about 250 of them are entered at the Duncan event.

American Dorper Sheep Breeders Society executive secretary Doug Gillespie told the Duncan Banner (http://is.gd/H0A3oQ) the show has drawn breeders from as far as California and Virginia, with plenty of participants from points in between.

Only two years ago, the show had 170 sheep entered.

The event is growing, in part, because the Dorper is growing in popularity.
