Three MS-13 members convicted of racketeering

Three members of the MS-13 gang were convicted Wednesday of racketeering charges that included murder, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District said.

A jury convicted William Cordova, 26, Jose Gutierrez, 21, and Melvin Sorto, 24, of taking part in gang activities that included the April 2007 murder of Edwin Ventura in Columbia Heights.

They were also accused of other assaults around the area, including a July 2006 shooting of a three people sitting in a car at a traffic light in Alexandria and a June 2007 shooting of a woman waiting for a bus in Petworth.

All three face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, prosecutors said. They will be formally sentenced March 15.
