Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is trying to add some life to his lagging presidential campaign by going hard after the Republican frontrunner, hotelier Donald Trump.
And as part of this takedown strategy, Jindal is now going after fellow 2016 competitor Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, whose admitted admiration for Trump has critics wondering whether the Tea Party senator is merely playing nice in the hopes of siphoning off some of Trump’s supporters.
Jindal attacked Cruz for that strategy in an op-ed for CNN titled, “Trump is a madman who must be stopped.”
“Jeb Bush, Rand Paul and Rick Perry admirably called Trump out for his conservative heresy, but it backfired because he doesn’t give a hoot about conservatism,” Jindal wrote.
“Ted Cruz is clinging to Trump like a limpet to an oil tanker, hoping to suck up his votes when Trump eventually sinks,” the Louisiana governor wrote. “Conservatives need to say what we are thinking: Donald Trump is a madman who must be stopped. Failure to speak out against Trump is an endorsement of Clinton.”
“We face a choice: We can decide to win, or we can be the biggest fools in history and put our faith not in our principles, but in an egomaniac who has no principles. It’s time for Trump to take the ride down his own elevator. It’s time we rally behind a serious candidate,” Jindal wrote.
Jindal’s words for Trump this week follow on the heels of similar remarks he made last week when he referred to the former reality TV star as a “narcissist,” an “egomaniac” and a “carnival act.”
Fox News’ seemingly skeptical Martha MacCallum asked Jindal of his “Get Trump” strategy on Monday, “Is this what you want to be doing?”
“Martha, our strategy is actually working,” he replied. “We’re moving up in the polls in Iowa … Somebody’s got to say the emperor’s got no clothes.”
