Father pleads guilty after torture, starvation, and death of 12-year-old son

A 43-year-old Pennsylvania father pleaded guilty after torturing and starving his 12-year-old son to death. As a result, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Scott Schollenberger’s trial was meant to start on Mar. 14. Instead, he opted to plead guilty to criminal homicide, child endangerment, and conspiracy for both counts. Schollenberger and his fiancee Kimberly Maurer were first charged in September 2020.

Schollenberger’s son, Maxwell, was found dead, naked, and covered in feces in May 2020. Authorities reported he was about half the weight of a healthy child his age, at 47.5 pounds.

Maxwell wasn’t enrolled in school, had never received medical attention, and lived in complete darkness with his father, siblings, and Maurer, according to authorities. As a result of their brother dying, the county placed the rest of the siblings with its children and youth agency, according to Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf.

Maurer, however, has not pleaded guilty. She is set to stand trial next month.
