Falls Church boasts best recycling rate in Virginia

Falls Church recycles its waste at a higher rate than any jurisdiction in Virginia, according to a Virginia Department of Environmental Quality report.

The city recycled 57.6 percent of its waste in 2009, according to the report. That means Falls Church recycled 7,183 tons of waste material, including paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, metals, yard debris and leaves.

Falls Church’s recycling rate easily exceeds that of other Northern Virginia cities and counties, though Falls Church collects generates less garbage than those other communities.

Alexandria recycles at a rate of 28.6 percent, Arlington County at 40 percent, the city of Fairfax at 49.9 percent, and Fairfax County at 39.4 percent.

While Falls Church is the best in the state, their rate falls short of the city’s own goal to recycle 65 percent of its waste.
