Navy identifies sailor killed by IED in Iraq

The service member killed Thursday by an improvised explosive device in Iraq has been identified as Chief Petty Officer Jason Finan.

The Pentagon announced on Thursday that the Navy chief was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3. The 34-year-old sailor was from Anaheim, Calif.

Finan was killed by an IED blast in northern Iraq, though it’s unclear if the casualty is linked to the operation to retake Mosul, which began this week. About 200 of the 5,000 American troops in Iraq are participating in that operation.
