Top Democrat accuses FBI of prioritizing GOP investigations to benefit Trump

Sen. Ron Wyden is accusing the FBI of withholding information from Democrats about Republican-led Senate activity.

In a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday, Wyden wrote about a number of different scenarios in which he believes Republicans were favored by the agency when it came to access to documents over Democrats.

“I am writing because I am deeply concerned that by violating its own policies the FBI is again succumbing to political pressure from Republicans to damage the Democratic presidential candidate,” he said.

The Oregon Democrat said one example of partisan favor by the FBI was it allowing Republican aides to view sensitive documents related to an agency briefing Trump received before taking office. He also claimed that there have been several requests provided to Republicans that Democrats weren’t aware of.

“These circumstances are deeply troubling,” he wrote. “Providing documents to Committee majorities without disclosure to the minority is unacceptable.”

Wyden wrote a similar letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in May claiming that there was also a disparity in how the State Department responded to document requests from Republicans and Democrats.

He particularly zoned in on the number of documents provided to the Senate Homeland Security Committee-led investigation in regard to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. The investigation has been the center of concern for Democrats who have accused several agencies of aiding Republicans in their inquiry ahead of the 2020 election.
