Anne Arundel increase cab fares by 50 cents a mile

All cab rides starting in Anne Arundel will be more expensive, including the dozens of cabs stationed at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The county council approved a 50 cent-a-mile fare increase this week that will go into effect within two months.

The meter will charge 25 cents every one-tenth of a mile, which is a 5-cent increase.

It will cost about $5 more to take a cab from BWI Airport in Linthicum to the Inner Harbor.

County officials and cab owners told The Examiner in August that the increase was needed to offset rising gas prices that have outpaced fares.

Since Anne Arundel doesn’t have a fuel surcharge, an increase was needed.

Emmett Willis, owner of Glen Burnie-based Associated Cab Co., said cab drivers are paying $25 more a day in fuel costs than they did in 2006.

Councilman Daryl Jones, D-Linthicum, originally proposed raising all fees and a higher rate than what passed, but Willis told officials such increases would deter ridership of the 520 cabs working in Anne Arundel.

The increase comes after a failed attempt to further regulate the cab industry, and warnings against cab drivers duping customers into paying a fuel surcharge.
