Teenager injured in Seattle’s CHOP zone in second shooting over weekend

A teenager was wounded in a shooting around Seattle’s CHOP zone Sunday evening.

The victim, a 17-year-old boy whose name has not been released publicly, arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound where he was treated and released shortly thereafter, according to KOMO News.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene and arrived at a pre-determined location just outside the barriers, but they were informed that the victim was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Details, including possible suspects and motives, remain unknown at this time.

This was the second shooting in as many days in the city’s “no-cop” zone which occupies the city’s Cal Anderson Park. One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting Saturday morning.

“Homicide detectives are investigating following a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday morning at 10th Avenue and East Pine Street,” the Seattle Police Department posted on its website. “One man was declared deceased at the hospital, and another male is being treated for life-threatening injuries.”

The post continued: “On June 20th, at approximately 2:30 AM, East Precinct officers responded to a report of shots fired in Cal Anderson Park. This is inside the area referred to as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP). Officers attempted to locate a shooting victim but were met by a violent crowd that prevented officers safe access to the victims. Officers were later informed that the victims, both males, had been transported to Harborview Medical Center by CHOP medics.”

Police abandoned the six-block zone, which included one of their stations, on June 8, after protesters took control of the area and declared it an autonomous zone. It has since been called the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone and later the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest.

Protests have popped up across the country over the past few weeks following the death of George Floyd. Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died on Memorial Day after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite his pleas for air.
