Apartment manager Aimco agreed Tuesday to a private settlement in a Florida lawsuit against Airbnb over listings from tenants whose leases prohibited short-term rentals on the site.
The announcement comes just a day after the start of a Florida trial that was poised to test Airbnb’s protections under a landmark 1996 Internet law. In a claim filed in state court in Miami-Dade County, Aimco alleged that Airbnb allowed hosts to offer Aimco properties even though it knew of the company’s ban.
Along with the Florida suit, Aimco, which operates rental sites in 17 states, will drop its appeal of a California case in which a federal judge said the Communications Decency Act insulates Airbnb from liability for the actions of people using its platform.
The settlement allows Aimco to “control short-term rental activity consistent with its contract and property rights,” the company said in a joint statement. “Aimco and Airbnb have agreed to meet to discuss opportunities in the multifamily housing industry.”
No additional details were provided, and Aimco declined to comment.
