Berwick works well on and off the field

Christine Hanley and Lisa Pitts may have met on the tennis courts, but they bring their best game to work.

The two friends founded Baltimore-based Berwick Associates in 2003, a business development and marketing communications firm, and named it after the street they were on when they thought of the idea.

“Seventeen years ago, we were introduced by a mutual friend to play tennis together,” Hanley said. “Over the years, there was this coursing conversation about business, but we had families and other responsibilities. Once the timing was right, Lisa and I formed Berwick.”

The two founders didn?t feel the need to bring anyone else into the company, because they have “the [freelance] contacts we needed; we can work with graphic designers, animators and others to fit the clients? need,” Pitts said.

“One of the beauties of [hiring freelancers] is having a wonderful roster of talented people who we can bring into a project based on what is needed by the client,” Hanley said. “We can really customize a project.”

The firm just recently acquired five new clients for 2007: real estate brokerage firm H&R Retail, event services business On3 Strategies, landscape firm Natural Concerns, human resources Web site HRTwentyFour and nonprofit organization Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage.

“Because we are the [only employees], we?re not passing clients off to a junior partner,” Pitts added. “We do a really good job of listening to our clients. We?re not coming in with this cookie-cutter approach, but instead we?re having a really in-depth conversation about what they need.”
