House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Joe Biden for president at the virtual Democratic National Convention, calling him “the president we need right now: battle-tested, forward-looking, honest, and authentic.”
The California Democrat and first female House speaker denounced Trump’s presidency, accusing him of trying to dismantle Obamacare instead of fighting to eliminate the coronavirus.
Pelosi was among several female speakers highlighting women’s issues on the third night of the convention. They all denounced Trump.
“We will remember in November, when we will elect Joe Biden president, whose heart is full of love for America, and rid the country of Trump’s heartless disregard for America’s goodness,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi has clashed frequently with Trump and no longer speaks to him. The two have not talked since last October.
“I’ve seen firsthand Donald Trump’s disrespectful facts for working families and for women in particular,” Pelosi said. “Disrespect written into his policies toward our health and our rights, not just his conduct. But we know what he doesn’t: that when women succeed, America succeeds. “
Pelosi said Sen. Kamala Harris, a fellow Californian picked by Biden to serve on the Democratic ticket with him, “is the vice president we need right now, committed to our Constitution, brilliant in defending it, and a witness to the women of this nation that our voices will be heard.”
