Mosquitoes in Prince William test positive for West Nile virus

Prince William County is reporting its first West Nile mosquitoes of the summer.

Mosquitoes from the Woodbridge and Lake Ridge areas tested positive for West Nile Virus on July 8.

The county’s mosquito control squad conducted an “intensive treatment” on the pools that were home to the positive mosquitoes, officials said. They will continue to monitor the area and might spray insecticide if necessary.

West Nile virus usually causes no sickness or mild, flu-like symptoms. It is most likely to cause more severe illness in people over the age of 50.

Prince William officials recommend that citizens wear insect repellent and get rid of any containers in yards that could collect standing water.
