Police are investigating a fatal crash in Silver Spring that happened when a driver apparently swerved in order to avoid hitting a Ride On bus.

Montgomery County police said the crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. Friday on the 8600 block of 16th Street.

The driver of a Honda Accord was approaching from behind a Ride On bus that had stopped to pick up a passenger. The car swerved off the road, then struck several objects — including a fire hydrant, street sign and the curb — before overturning and stopping in an embankment on the side of the road, police said.

The driver, whose name was not released because family members are still being notified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The car didn’t strike the bus.

Police said officers are still investigating the crash and any witnesses are asked to call the collision reconstruction unit at 301-840-2435.
