Montgomery courses to donate $1 of greens fees to soldiers’ families

Montgomery County golfers frequenting public courses this Saturday have a good excuse to hit the links: $1 of every greens fee paid will go toward Wounded Warriors Inc., a charity for families of soldiers who become disabled or lost their lives on military duty.

The county’s nine public courses will join courses across the country Saturday in Patriot Golf Day, spearheaded by PGA of America professional Dan Rooney of Stillwater, Okla. Rooney is the club pro at a course in Michigan. He was also an F-16 pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, and logged two tours of duty in Iraq. Following his most recent tour he began to think of ways he could stay involved in the war effort.

“We are extremely excited to be a part of this program and represent Montgomery County in helping the families of those who have lost their lives, or who have experienced life-changing injuries,” Wayne Rohauer, director of golf operations for the Montgomery County Revenue Authority, said in a statement. “This is a wonderful opportunity for golfers in our community to give back to those who have given everything.”
