Venture capitalist and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel said he believes President Trump will be re-elected in 2020 if he chooses to run again.
“I think that if he runs again, he will get re-elected,” Thiel told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo at an Economic Club of New York event this week. “He’ll make a judgment. And if he thinks he can get re-elected, he will run. And if he runs, I think he will win.”
Thiel argued that Democrats will perform well in the midterm elections in November, but that the 2020 election requires Democrats learn from their mistakes when Hillary Clinton was the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016.
“There were issues that [Clinton] was not talking about, not relating to,” he said. “I’m not yet sure that there will be that adjustment.”
Thiel claimed that if Democrats keep “hating Trump all the time,” it will negatively impact their ability to be invested in issues the nation is facing.
Thiel also said there is a “vague parallel” in how Democrats have behaved toward Trump to Republicans’ treatment of former President Barack Obama.
“There’s a reason Obama got elected. There were some very real problems in this country. You had to talk about those problems,” he said. “It was a failure by the Republicans not to do that in 2012. And I think the Democrats are setting themselves up for an even bigger version of that failure.”
