Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and his wife, Catherine, are suing a drunk driver who hit the county executive’s county-owned vehicle in 2009, Leggett’s spokesman Patrick Lacefield confirmed. The vehicle — a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Lt. Samantha Horwitz, a member of the Montgomery County Security Services Division — was struck on March 1, 2009, on Sandy Spring Road in Burtonsville, according to a 2009 statement by the county. The other driver, Kendall Sterling Smith of Wheaton, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at a red signal. The lawsuit was filed last month, just before the statute of limitations expired, Leggett told The Washington Examiner. The accident put him out of work for several weeks when it happened, he said, and he and his wife have both been receiving medical treatment as a result of the acceident for the last three years.- Rachel Baye
