Road crews began tearing up U Street NW Tuesday, kicking off an improvement project that won’t be done until April 2013.
The $5 million street repair project, similar to the one nearly complete on 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, will repair the road and sidewalks and add landscaping, trash cans and decorative sidewalks in front of the Lincoln Theatre. The project will also install new parking meters and traffic signals, among other updates.
The work began at 9th Street NW and will continue westward to 14th Street NW.
District transportation officials promise residents and visitors will be able to access all businesses — including the street’s popular jazz clubs and restaurants —at all times.
