Peaceoholics co-founder Ron Moten announced Thursday morning on WPFW’s “Discuss D.C.” show that he’s running for Ward 7’s council seat.
Moten faces an uphill battle against incumbent Yvette Alexander, but she has become vulnerable as of late. Many in Ward 7 are upset with over reports that she misspent thousands of dollars from her constituent services fund. She’ll also have to overcome her association with Mayor Vince Gray, who is down in the polls after a series of scandals.
Moten became well known last summer as a quasi spokesman for Mayor Adrian Fenty’s failed re-election campaign. Since then he’s been outspoken about the rising tide of youth gang violence in the city, pointing fingers at Gray for cutting funding to Moten’s Peaceoholics, who for years helped solve conflicts among neighborhood gangs.
Moten said on “Discuss D.C.” that he’s hoping to incite a revolution east of the Anacostia River. He plans to lead the charge as he runs for council.
“I’m a fighter for the people and I will fight to the end,” Moten told The Washington Examiner after the show. “I’m a public servant, not a self servant,” he said. “I know people in Ward 7 are looking for jobs and economic development and I’m going to bring it.”
