Steve King urges Trump to shut down border and ‘bring this saga of lawlessness to a close’

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, on Friday encouraged President Trump to follow through with his threat to shut down the border.

“Shut it down and bring this saga of lawlessness to a close, @RealDonaldTrump. We can’t wait for the next election,” King tweeted. “Every day a huge caravan spreads itself across America. This is the worst destruction of the Rule of Law in our nation’s history. Shut it down!”

King is among the most outspoken foes of illegal immigration in Congress. His many critics accuse him of having a soft spot for white nationalism. House Republican leaders in January stripped King of his committee assignments for his comments on the topic over the years.

Trump has repeatedly said recently that he is prepared to shut down the border. On Friday morning, he threatened that he would close the border, or large sections of it, if Mexico didn’t “immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States.”

According to Trump, the move would be “a good thing” for the U.S. because “we lose so much money” to Mexico.

Trump reiterated the sentiment later on Friday and said there was a good chance he would close the border down.

“There is a very good likelihood I’ll be closing the border next week,” Trump said Friday afternoon.

Trump declared a national emergency at the border last month that would direct military funding toward the border wall project, a move that came after Congress failed to get on board with his requested funding for a border wall.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, approximately 100 groups of migrants have been identified near the border since the fiscal year started in October.
