4 overnight fires in P.G. homes that lost power

Four fires were reported overnight at Prince George’s County homes that lost power during the snowstorm.

Prince George’s County fire and emergency services said the blazes occurred:

  • At a home on the 100 block of Green Hill Avenue in Greenbelt at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fire began in the basement and the cause is still being investigated. No one was injured.
  • At a house on the 4000 block of Alton Street in Capitol Heights at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. A 10-year-old boy and a 60-year-old woman were taken to a hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. The fire department said an unattended candle sparked the blaze.
  • At a home on the 4500 block of Woodgate Way in Glenn Dale at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday. An adult woman had to be rescued by firefighters and was taken to a hospital in serious condition for treatment of second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. The fire began in the kitchen, authorities said. The cause is still under investigation.
  • At a house on the 5000 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park at 5:30 a.m. No one was injured but the first floor partially collapsed. Authorities said fire stemmed from a basement fireplace.
