‘Nice!’: Trump blasts DC mayor for keeping city police away from White House protests

President Trump issued high praise for the Secret Service and words of rebuke for the mayor of Washington, D.C., amid nationwide protests and riots.

Trump chided Democratic district Mayor Muriel Bowser on Saturday for not allowing law enforcement to contain protests outside the executive mansion Friday night, noting she is “always looking for money and help.”

“As you saw last night, they were very cool & very professional. Never let it get out of hand. Thank you! On the bad side, the D.C. Mayor, @MurielBowser, who is always looking for money & help, wouldn’t let the D.C. Police get involved. “Not their job.” Nice!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The White House was briefly put on lockdown Friday night as thousands of protesters gathered outside its gates to protest the death of George Floyd. Several members of the press were moved inside the West Wing of the White House for their safety.

One of the protesters outside the White House was reportedly taken into custody by the Secret Service after she climbed over the barrier. Trump praised the conduct of the Secret Service as “totally professional, but also very cool.”

“They let the ‘protesters’ scream & rant as much as they wanted, but whenever someone got too frisky or out of line, they would quickly come down on them, hard – didn’t know what hit them. The front line was replaced with fresh agents, like magic,” Trump said in an earlier tweet.

“Big crowd, professionally organized, but nobody came close to breaching the fence. If they had they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen.”

District police also said they made approximately five arrests during the protests.

Later Saturday morning, Trump called for a “MAGA night at the White House” after the Secret Service maintained order amid the protests.

“Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???” he wrote.
