North Korea says it conducted ‘important’ test on spy satellite

North Korea said Sunday that it performed “another important” test for reconnaissance satellite systems — one day after the country allegedly launched a ballistic missile toward South Korea’s East Sea, according to state media.

North Korean Central News Agency reported that North Korea’s National Aerospace Development Administration and Academy of National Defense Science tested the satellite’s data transmission, reception, and ground-based control systems, according to Reuters.

“Through the test, the NADA confirmed the reliability of data transmission and reception system of the satellite, its control command system and various ground-based control systems,” state media said, as reported by the outlet.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected Saturday’s missile launch, which occurred days before its own presidential election.

It was the ninth missile launch conducted in 2022 by North Korea, which has ramped up missile tests despite condemnation from the West. In January, North Korea suggested it would lift a self-imposed moratorium on nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests, citing “hostile” U.S. policy.
