Toys “R” Us has agreed to stop selling vinyl bibs that are reported to contain significant levels of lead, a day after receiving a letter from Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler.
The Chinese-made store-brand vinyl bibs in question were sold under the “Especially for Baby,” “Koala Baby,” and “Disney” baby labels.
Gansler wrote to Gerald Storch, CEO of Toys “R” Us, last week requesting that he stop selling the vinyl bibs, and by Friday the company alerted all of its stores to remove the vinyl bibs from their shelves.
“I am writing to ask you to immediately stop the sale of Toys ?R? Us store-brand vinyl bibs, including those sold under the Especially for Baby and Koala Baby labels, until such time as you can ensure that none of the products contain lead,” Gansler wrote.
“I was disturbed to learn that Toys ?R? Us and Babies ?R? Us stores have sold bibs in the State of Maryland that have been determined to contain significant levels of lead. I trust that you also were disturbed by reports on your bibs and that you will take immediate action to prevent unwary parents from purchasing these products and additional children from being exposed to them.”
Toys “R” Us also agreed that consumers who purchased the bibs may return them to the stores where they were purchased and receive refunds. The company is also implementing a new policy regarding the amount of lead that is allowed in the products it sells.
Gansler said he was pleased that Toys ?R? Us has “quickly agreed to remove these potentially dangerous products from its store shelves.”
