WATCH: NYC Mayor pushes for Times Square to be gun-free zone

New York City Mayor Eric Adams wants to keep guns out of Times Square.

He signed two bills, one of which will focus on dealing with illegal gun trafficking within New York City. The second would make Times Square a “sensitive zone,” meaning legal gun owners would not be allowed to carry a weapon into the area.

“This is the heart of our city, and you don’t want a city, particularly, that people are carrying illegal — or, based on the Supreme Court — legal guns in this area,” Adams said at a news conference Tuesday.

However, the second city bill could be in jeopardy after the New York State Supreme Court temporarily blocked several parts of the state’s new gun law, which required those wanting to have a gun license to submit their social media accounts as part of the review. The legal battle on that is continuing.

When Adams was challenged by a reporter about it, he said, “We’re going to make sure we are in complete conformity with whatever the court determines.”

Adams, who said he owns three guns, says the city is too densely populated for people to carry a weapon in Times Square.

“It’s difficult for trained law enforcement officers to make the split-second decision of who legally is carrying a gun, so how is the average public going to make that determination?”

“I believe in the right to be a responsible gun owner. This is not an assault on gun owners. This is an assault on making bad decisions that could impact the lives of innocent people,”

he added.

As Adams was making the announcement, he noticed someone nearby was smoking marijuana, which clearly distracted him.

“One law that was passed is clearly being practiced right now, because I smell some weed,” Adams said as he laughed awkwardly and ended the news conference.
